Karl Prantl

Karl Prantl, born in 1923 in Pöttsching in what is now Burgenland, returned from the war and studied painting from 1946 to 1952 at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Albert Paris Gütersloh. As a self-taught artist, he was one of the first sculptors in Austrian art after 1945 to devote himself to abstraction. The formal language of his oeuvre oscillates between the geometric and the organic, which is captured in both small-scale and monumental sculpture. His works are exclusively in stone. This determines and influences Prantl's working process and places the material itself at the centre of the artwork.
